Basierend auf dem Kinderfilm Alice im Wunderland hat Regisseur Jan Svankmajer eine fantasievolle Version des Klassikers inszeniert. Alice erscheint als reale Person, alle anderen Charaktere sind in Stop-Motion animiert.

Betty Boop’s Snow White contains one of the most miraculous pieces of moving imagery I’ve ever seen. At the climax of the cartoon, after our heroine has been frozen inside a coffin of ice and ridden by seven dwarves into a mysterious cave, one of her companions, Koko the Clown, is turned into a ghost by the wicked queen. He then launches into a sublime, melancholic rendition of St. James’ Infirmary Blues. It’s an astonishing scene, entirely irruptive, impossible; a piece of real magic wherein the singer, Cab Calloway, was filmed and rotoscoped performing for the express purpose, inhabits the ghost, imbuing the animation with an almost documentary realism, albeit overpainted in hand-drawn cells and cartoon plasticity. The scene’s affect is crazy, contemporarily sad and, really, is something I’ve been trying to get to in every animation I’ve ever made.

Švankmajer’s Alice is the definitive adaptation of Lewis Carrol’s novel. It is a brutal, stuttering, inanimate, pubescent nightmare; it feels entirely attuned to the original in this regard. What Alice sees as she plunges deeper and deeper into Wonderland is often genuinely disturbing, spun from her everyday, domestic environs, laced with paranoia. She moves through this world with the kind of acceptance and stoicism only dream-logic affords. Animation, for Švankmajer, is fundamentally heretical, used to conjure perversity, queasiness, ontological error. Uncanniness, certainly. Animation starts with necromancy and violation. I grew up with Alice: we’d fairly regularly watch it as a whole family, sprawled across the sofa. It has fundamentally forged some significant part of me; I know it as if it were of my own subconscious. Švankmajer and Alice in particular have informed my work, my desires, my dreams.
